Sebastian Mayer

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1973 in Germany, I have been a freelance photographer since 1997. My first artistic experiences began at the age of 12 in photography, followed by activities as a comic artist, graphic designer, illustrator, screen printer, and artist in the fields of painting and installation. My works have been shown in numerous publications and exhibitions.

In 1999, I completed my studies in media art at the 'bildo akademie berlin', influenced by the Bauhaus, with focuses on analog photography, digital production, media, and design theory.

My career as a pop-cultural photographer includes publications in the New York Times, Dazed & Confused, Spex Magazine, Wire, The Observer, and Leica Fotografie International, as well as commissions for clients like ERCO, Freitag Japan, Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, BMW, and Lotus Cars.

I have photographed musicians such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yamataka Eye, Iggy Pop, Peaches, and King Krule, and have also collaborated with artists like Carsten Nicolai, Dirk Bell, Daniel Josefsohn, The Otolith Group.

After 15 years of studying and working in Berlin, I moved to Liverpool and London in 2005, then to Rio de Janeiro, via New York to Japan, where I lived for 7 years in Tokyo and Kyoto. In 2014, I returned to my homeland, Germany, and stayed in Berlin until I moved to Zurich, Switzerland, in March 2020.

In Zurich, I moved into a studio that I called "The Hermeneutic Garage", where I can work undisturbed on my own projects. Over the past few years, I have mainly managed my photographic archive, painted in acrylic and oil, written, and drawn. I have published a small- circulation magazine inspired by Situationism and Dadaism ("The Hermeneutic Magazine").

I have participated in a few group exhibitions and displayed my works in a small solo exhibition at the showcase gallery 'Die Diele'. 

KURZ-BIOGRAFIE

Ich bin seit 1997 Freelance Photographer, geboren 1973 in Deutschland. Meine ersten künstlerischen Erfahrungen machte ich ab dem 12. Lebensjahr in der Fotografie, gefolgt von Tätigkeiten als Comiczeichner, Grafiker, Illustrator, Siebdrucker und Künstler im Bereich Malerei und Installation. Meine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Publikationen und Ausstellungen gezeigt.

1999 schloss ich mein Studium in Medienkunst an der vom Bauhaus geprägten "bildo akademie berlin" ab, mit Schwerpunkten in Analoger Fotografie, Digitaler Produktion, Medien- und Gestalt-Theorie.

Meine berufliche Laufbahn als Fotograf, spezialisiert auf Portrait und Architektur, umfasst Veröffentlichungen in der New York Times, Dazed and Confused, Spex Magazin, Wire, The Observer und Leica Fotografie International sowie Aufträge für Kunden wie ERCO, Freitag Japan, Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, BMW und Lotus Cars. Ich habe Musiker wie Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yamataka Eye, Iggy Pop, Peaches und King Krule fotografiert und habe zudem mit Künstlern wie Carsten Nicolai, Dirk Bell, Daniel Josefsohn, The Otolith Group zusammengearbeitet.

Nach 15 Jahren Studium und Arbeit in Berlin zog ich 2005 nach Liverpool und London, dann nach Rio de Janeiro, über New York nach Japan, wo ich 7 Jahre in Tokyo und Kyoto lebte. Im Jahr 2014 kehrte ich in meine Heimat Deutschland zurück und blieb in Berlin, bis ich im März 2020 nach Zürich, Schweiz, weiterzog.

In Zürich bezog ich ein Studio, das ich 'Die Hermeneutische Garage' nannte, wo ich ungestört an meinen eigenen Projekten arbeiten kann. In den letzten Jahren habe ich hauptsächlich mein fotografisches Archiv verwaltet, in Acryl und Öl gemalt, geschrieben und gezeichnet. Ich habe ein kleinauflagiges Magazin herausgegeben, das von Situationismus und Dadaismus inspiriert wurde ('Das Hermeneutische Magazin').

Ich habe an einigen Gruppenausstellungen teilgenommen und meine Arbeiten in einer kleinen Einzelausstellung in der Vitrinengalerie 'Die Diele' ausgestellt.
